Louisiana’s 1st Choice Auto Auction Embodies the word LAGNIAPPE
For those of you outside South Louisiana, you may not have heard the word lagniappe before now. It is a Cajun French word Louisiana’s 1st Choice Auto Auction uses to describe what they offer their customers every day. It encompasses many different aspects of what you can expect at this fast growing auction on the Gulf Coast.
Whether it takes the form of complimentary breakfast and lunch every sale day, free snow cones for their dealers during the hot Summer months, charitable efforts spearheaded by the auction and whole heartedly supported by the dealers, the constant expansion and improvements they make to the facility, and their outstanding customer service, you can see for yourself that Louisiana’s 1st Choice Auto Auction embodies the essence of lagniappe. Their special event sales such as Mardi Gras, Anniversary, Summer Lagniappe (yes, they even named one of their events with this term), and the holiday John Dough event feature exceptional consignment from their growing family of fleet/lease, dealer, and wholesale accounts and include enticing prizes worth thousands of dollars to continue the lagniappe theme. On August 25th they will kick off football season with a Tailgate Event featuring 1000 vehicles, over $10,000 in tailgate related prizes, and a special guest appearance by Hall of Fame Quarterback Jim Kelly. He will be signing autographs and raising money for his charity, Hunter’s Hope. This will also mark the end of the Summer-long “Go Long with ARI” promotion to reward buyers of ARI vehicles with John Dough and a chance to win a pair of New Orleans Saints, LSU Tigers, or SLU Lions football tickets. Plus the top five Go Long with ARI buyers will receive a football signed by Jim Kelly. Now that is lagniappe!
Owner and managing partner John Poteet explains the concept this way,“In its most basic form lagniappe is the superior service we provide our customers. By definition, the word Lagniappe means a little something ‘extra’ that is not expected or demanded. It is a uniquely Louisiana tradition and one we have practiced here at Louisiana’s 1st Choice Auto Auction since we opened our doors 13+ years ago.”
General Manager, Don Sistrunk, once a car dealer himself, says “our customers come first and foremost in every decision we make, every sale day promotion we have, and every expansion project we complete. Our goal is to always provide our family of dealers with our signature lagniappe, that something extra they get only at our auction from our team of professionals. Whether that is getting the right car for the right price for our buyers, clearing inventory and making that process easier for our sellers, or improving the overall auction experience for all, Louisiana’s 1st Choice Auto Auction makes lagniappe real.”
The recent Used Car News Most Charitable Auction award and the second ARI Region 5 Best Auction Award garnered by Louisiana’s 1st Choice Auto Auction are confirmation that lagniappe does indeed have a positive impact on both the auction staff, customers, and the community. Marketing Manager, Jacob Warren, who has been with 1st Choice since 2004 said it this way. “Lagniappe is the very heart of who we are as an auction and is a cornerstone of our culture. Going the extra mile, giving more than 100%, 1st Choice Lagniappe, it is who we are.”

Louisiana's 1st Choice Auto Auction
ARI chose Louisiana’s 1st Choice Auto Auction on “both quantified statistical performance and superior customer service skills in the handling of their account.”
“We were thrilled to learn that we led our region for ARI in 2014, and I share this award with all the hard-working members of our staff here at Louisiana’s 1st Choice,” said John Poteet, managing partner. “We are fortunate to have an auction team that that not only takes pride in their work but shows innovation and creativity on the job along with a determination to make our customers happy. Their efforts produce excellent results for ARI week in and week out, and are directly responsible for our distinction as ARI’s 2014 Auction of the Year in Region 5.”
Poteet notes Louisiana’s 1st Choice Auto Auction has been handling vehicles for ARI since May of 2008, and has been consistently ranked among the top three auctions in its region. This is the second ARI Top Auction award they have earned in the last four years. They were named the Region 5 Top Auction in 2011. ARI runs vehicles every week at the auction and is frequently the focus of special promotions, including the auction’s annual Mardi Gras event and its popular “John Dough” program, where buyers earn “Dough” based on attendance and buying activity that can be used to purchase prizes at the auction’s anniversary and Christmas sales.
The Award Winning team at Louisiana's
1st Choice Auto Auction
As Louisiana’s 1st Choice Auto Auction prepares to celebrate its 13th Anniversary, Poteet reports that the auction continues to attract larger consignments and more buyers to the auction lanes. Two additional lanes are being added to the auction arena to meet the growth and will be open for operation by April 2015. A new detail and condition report writing operations center will open simultaneously with the new lanes, in time for the 13th Anniversary Sale Event on May 19.
“Attendance at Louisiana’s 1st Choice Auto Auction has increased every year since we opened our doors in 2002, with a 10% increase over last year’s numbers alone,” said Poteet. “Our mission is to provide our valued customers with superior customer service that exceeds their expectations, and the Auction of the Year Award with ARI, coupled with increased activity in the auction lane, indicates that our efforts are being recognized.”
Concluded Poteet: “We like to say that superior service is our signature Lagniappe–a Louisiana tradition that means a little something ‘extra’ that is not expected or demanded. We appreciate ARI’s recognition of our commitment to their business and our efforts on their behalf. Certainly this award from ARI is their Lagniappe to Louisiana’s 1st Choice Auto Auction!”
